An urgent recall has been issued for thousands of sandwiches and wraps from supermarkets after two suppliers, Greencore Group and Samworth Brothers Manton Wood, initiated a recall over concerns of potential E. coli contamination.

Greencore Group, which provides products to several major supermarkets, described the move as a "precautionary measure" and is advising customers not to consume the items but to return them instead. Samworth Brothers Manton Wood, supplier to Tesco and One Stop, has also opted for a precautionary recall.

E. coli, known for causing severe bloody diarrhoea, can be transmitted through contaminated food, close contact with an infected individual, or direct contact with animals or their environments.

The Food Standards Agency released a list of the recalled products on June 14, stating that although the bacteria had not been detected in the products, the recall was being carried out as a precaution.

Darren Whitby, head of incidents at the Food Standards Agency, commented: "Sandwich manufacturers are taking a precautionary measure to recall various sandwiches wraps and salads in response to findings from investigations by the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Food Standards Scotland (FSS), and UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), who are working to identify the cause of an ongoing outbreak caused by shiga toxin-producing E.coli (Stec).", reports Wales Online.

Wendi Shepherd, a health consultant for Public Health Wales, commented at the beginning of June regarding the shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) cases in Wales: "STEC is a nasty infection and can make people seriously unwell it can be particularly difficult for young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems."

She added, "Public Health Wales is working with our partners across the UK and within Wales to identify the source of this incident. We have given clinical management guidance to healthcare providers across the country."

She also advised, "I would advise anyone who has bloody diarrhoea or severe stomach cramps to seek medical attention. If you are affected you should take care to wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water and clean surfaces thoroughly to prevent transmission of the infection."

"You should also avoid seeing other people or preparing food for them if you experience diarrhoea and vomiting, especially people in hospital or care homes. Do not return to work, school, nursery, or similar settings until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped."
