After the "carnage" of day three at the 118th US Open England's Justin Rose remains in the hunt, one shot behind the leading quartet of Tony Finau, Daniel Berger, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson.

Tournament organisers admitted they went too far with the set up at Shinnecock Hills on a day when only three players broke par.

Scores of 66 early in the day were enough to lift Finau and Berger from a tie for 45th to a share of the lead on three over par but the USGA chief executive Mike Davis admitted that the course set up had been such that "well-executed shots were not rewarded and in some cases [were] penalised."

The field will hope for more equitable conditions today.
