This Is Us star Chrissy Metz has teased that the emotional drama's final season will include goodbyes to "two very important characters".

With the premiere of season six on the horizon, fans will finally get to see exactly what happens following the flash-forward in the show's season five finale, which featured some very surprising revelations.

Metz, who plays Kate Pearson in This Is Us, has told Entertainment Weekly that fans won't spend any less time sobbing during the final season, revealing that there are some "difficult" scenes on the way.

"People are going to be on the edge of their seats with characters' health issues," she said. "Also, what it means for the family and decisions that have to be made – the dynamic of children in the family. Two very important characters, we will see the end of their journey and that's always just so difficult. It's going to be a lot."

Offering further hints about what viewers can expect from the final episodes, the actress said that fans will "see a lot of closure, which is interesting, because when one door closes, another one opens".

"So there's a lot of closure, but there's also new beginnings," she said. "There will be a lot of things tied up – beginnings and endings, maybe of people's lives and relationships. And ego and pride."

You'll also need to stock up on the tissues, because Metz has promised that season six will be even more emotional than its predecessors.

"I do think, as a whole, it will be the most emotional," she said. "Because we are seeing so much take place, whether it's with Rebecca or a relationship such as Kate and Toby's. Also, there's already heightened emotion because it's the last season, so I definitely think it will be the most emotional. But also there's going to be a lot of contentment."

Speaking of Kate, one of the big surprises in the season five finale was the revelation that Kate and Toby Damon (Chris Sullivan) are no longer married – and Kate is, in fact, set to marry her music school colleague Phillip (Chris Geere).

But Metz has promised that we won't be seeing any finger-pointing between Kate and Toby, but instead will get a "fascinating" insight into how their relationship slowly changes.

"It's really going to be interesting to watch everybody figure out how the changes will take place, but then also coming out on the other side of it and what it means," she said. "In relationships, we want to point fingers and say, 'Oh, it's the other person.'

"It's hard to accept our own faults or our own issues, but what is so cool about Kate and Toby is that neither one can really blame [the] other. We're going to get to see that unfold.

"As much as somebody wants to take a side and say, 'Oh, I'm Team Kate' or 'I'm Team Toby', it's 'Team Let's Have a Healthy Relationship Even if We're Not in a Relationship'. I think it's going to be really fascinating to watch it unravel."

This Is Us airs on NBC in the US and on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
