The distribution of 100,000 free condoms in Utah has been halted because of racy slogans on the packaging.

The campaign featured phrases like “SL,UT”, a word play on Utah and its capital, Salt Lake City, “Enjoy Your Mountain” and “Explore Utah’s Caves”.

It was launched by the state’s department of health as part of a campaign on HIV prevention and safe sex.

But Republican governor Gary Herbert stopped the handout and asked for the branding to be reworked.

The department has apologised for “the offensive packaging”.

One featured words attributed to Mormon leader Brigham Young upon reaching a valley in Salt Lake County — “This is the place” — with a graphic of a bed.

More than 60 per cent of Utah is Mormon. The church is opposed to same-sex sex and sex outside of marriage.
