Vacant Saegertown area home destroyed by fire

May 4—HAYFIELD TOWNSHIP — A long-vacant home near Saegertown was destroyed by fire early Friday morning.

The cause of the 4:30 a.m. blaze at 17580 Maple Drive in Hayfield Township is considered undetermined, Chief Evan Hasko of Hayfield Central Hose Co. Volunteer Fire Department, said.

"It was down and falling into the basement when we arrived. The home has been vacant about 10 years," Hasko said. "There was no insurance on it."

The one-and-one-half-story home, owned by John Scheckler of Saegertown, did have electrical service, Hasko said.

The cause of the fire is considered undetermined due to the house's total destruction, Hasko said.

The fire was spotted by a motorist traveling on nearby Interstate 79, Hasko said. The home, located east of the interstate, is about 3 miles west of Saegertown.

Hasko said there were no injuries fighting the fire.

Hayfield was assisted at the scene by Saegertown, Blooming Valley, Vernon Central, Venango and West Mead 2 volunteer fire departments and Meadville Area Ambulance Service. The last units returned to quarters at 6 a.m.
