Labour's Kanishka Narayan has won the Vale of Glamorgan seat from the Conservatives. Former cabinet minister Alun Cairns, who has represented the seat since 2010, came second and loses his place in Parliament.

Alun Cairns, former Secretary of State for Wales had won with an increased majority at each general election since 2010 until losing now. YouGov polls had suggested Labour would win the bellwether constituency so while it was a bad night for the Tories and Cairns, it was no real surprise.

Mr Narayan won the election with 17,740 votes compared to second-placed Alun Cairns who got 13,524 votes. Turn out was 61.62%.

Speaking after the result Mr Narayan said: "My message is one of gratitude for everyone who put trust in me and the Labour Party. I also have a commitment to those who did not vote for us. We are going to reach out and deliver starting today.

"One over arching challenge is delivering in a place where we have come from - economic chaos. We are going to be re-building trust and integrity with the public."

The Vale's new MP thanked the other candidates and thanked Mr Cairns for the "focus on the community" during his time as MP.

Defeated candidate Alun Cairns said it was an honour to have served as an MP for 14 years and thanked his wife and son for their support.

“I hope that Mr Narayan is able to continue the projects I started . I hope the regeneration scheme will continue and the station in St Athan."

Early on in the evening, the other parties had already resigned themselves to what they thought was an inevitable result.Independent Steven Sluman and Reform UK candidate Toby Rhodes-Matthews both predicted a Labour win, while Plaid and the Liberal Democrat candisates wouldn't even comment and looked gloomy.

Reform UK's candidate Toby Rhodes-Matthews came in third place. The Vale of Glamorgan has been traditionally a bellweather seat which has changed hands depending on who is in power in Westminster.

There were eight hopefuls standing here in the 2024 general election. There have been some changes under the boundary review. It is getting marginally smaller, losing 8.3% of its current size to Cardiff South and Penarth.
