Vera ITV cast and crew in Northumberland as village's name changed and urgent casting call made

A Northumberland village has had its name changed after being taken over by the cast and crew of Vera for the much loved show's final series. And there is also a chance for locals to get in on the action, as an urgent call out has been made for more extras to take part.

Two months have now passed since the bombshell announcement that Vera will come to an end in 2025, with ITV breaking the news and lead actress Brenda Blethyn admitting she was sad to say 'cheerio' to her iconic character, who has been delighting millions of viewers since the hit drama made its debut back in 2011.

Filming on the 14th and final series got going at the end of May, with the first few locations including Cambois, Blyth and Gateshead, before production moved onto South Shields, Whitley Bay and Hartlepool. There was great excitement and plenty of curiosity amongst residents in Glanton a few weeks ago, when letters arrived through their doors informing them that Vera would be descending on their village to shoot scenes,

And, on Tuesday locals got a look at BAFTA winner Brenda and co-star David Leon, in the role of returning sidekick Joe Ashworth, in front of cameras, as they also noticed signage revealing a temporary name change for Glanton, as it became Ghyllstead, with the new name also featured on a parish council notice board.

With more filming due in Glanton and the surrounding area scheduled for next week, a casting call has also been issued for more supporting actors. A post appeared on talent agency Ne14.tv's Facebook page on Tuesday afternoon which read: "Black and Asian Adults only. Own transport is vital as the calls will be very early in the morning. Filming in Glanton, Northumberland."
