Eagle eyed Vera fans claim to have 'rumbled' a high profile guest star for the final series of the much love drama, after Coronation Street star Chris Gascoyne was spotted in Newcastle this week, just as filming was kicking off.

ITV bosses dealt a huge blow to viewers last month, with the announcement that Vera will come to an end next year after 14 series. The statement on the show wrapping up came complete with some emotional quotes from lead star Brenda Blethyn, as the BAFTA winner admitted she was 'sad' to be saying goodbye to her famous sleuthing alias.

On the same day news broke of Vera ending, the cast reunited for a script read through and now they are busy filming scenes for the last two episodes in the North East. Brenda and co-star David Leon were seen in front of camera in Cambois, Northumberland, on April 29, with Brenda and Vera's instantly recognisable Land Rover spotted in Blyth later the same day.

As locals have been recruited as extras, the cast and crew have also been in Gateshead and Ashington over the last week, with production set to switch to South Shields this week, before returning to Blyth on Friday.

And, whether it's just a coincidence or not, Chris, known to millions for playing Peter Barlow in Coronation Street for decades, was in Newcastle last week, posing for a photo with a fan, as the picture then found its way onto social media. Sharing it on X, one fan wrote: "spotted today in newcastle, apparently he’s been filming something for tv. i’m sAT," with another responding: "I’ve never wanted this to happen so much in my life, Chris in a suit every Sunday night with our Vera! Been manifesting this forever"

Chris made his exit from Corrie in emotional scenes at Christmas, as Peter backed his bags and left Wetherfield for good as some viewers declared they were left in tears by his departure.
