Vera star returns to screens after quitting show

Vera star Kenny Doughty has sparked excitement with news of a forthcoming TV project. Just over a year ago, he left the beloved detective drama.

Stepping into DS Aiden Healy's shoes during the fifth series, Kenny succeeded David Leon and took up the mantle to great approval. His leaving was an unexpected jolt, particularly for the show's star Brenda Blethyn.

Kenny bid farewell by sharing a nostalgic Instagram post featuring snapshots with his co-stars. Labelled "Thanks for the memories", it was taken as a hint at his departure, which he confirmed as a "difficult decision" in the spring of 2023.

On Instagram, Kenny recognised all who made his journey memorable: "I want to thank everyone who's made this amazing time so joyous, ITV, Silverprint, all the brilliant cast and crew BUT of course my buddy and inspiration Brenda Blethyn. The perfect leading star who I owe so much to. I feel lucky to have you as a friend, you make me howl with laughter and have been a rock for me over the years. I can't thank you enough. Precious times.", reports the Express.

The heartfelt tribute ended with a nod to the devoted audience of Vera: "And finally the Vera fans: without you and your support I would never have made so many films. You really are the best fans in the world. Thank you so much for your loyalty and love for the show."

Since the episode aired last December, Kenny has maintained a relatively low profile. Kenny, who tied the knot with acclaimed actress Ashley Jensen at the end of 2022, has been enjoying some downtime in Shetland where his wife is filming the latest series of the BBC drama Shetland.

However, fans of Kenny will be thrilled to hear that he's hinted at a return to acting. Earlier this week, he took to Instagram to reveal that he's back on set.

Sharing a photo of a pint of Guinness at Dublin airport, Kenny wrote: "Slainte! Treating myself to an early weekend pint at the airport. Week 1 of filming in the bag! ! Looking forward to a weekend home. Have gorgeous weekends! " (sic).

His post sparked a wave of excitement among his followers, with one fan eagerly asking: "What's coming up? Miss you on Vera - miss you very much." Another follower asked: "What you filming and do you miss Vera it's not the same without you."
