Brenda Blethyn, known for her role as Vera in the ITV drama, is set for a 'dangerous' exit as plot details leak online.

Brenda will soon be filming her final episodes of Vera, with her character facing what's being described as her 'most dangerous' investigation yet, following the release of details from author Ann Cleeves' new book.

Fans of the popular ITV drama were taken aback on Monday when a statement was released by the broadcaster, including comments from Brenda herself, confirming that the much-loved show is drawing to a close after 14 series. Brenda, a BAFTA winner, has portrayed the straight-talking detective DCI Stanhope for 13 years, captivating millions of viewers not only in the UK but worldwide with her adventures with the Northumberland and City Police.

The most recent episode of Vera aired on ITV in January. Following the success of the Christmas special The Rising Tide, which drew a large audience on Boxing Day, three more feature-length episodes were broadcasted. These saw Kenny Doughty replaced by David Leon, as Vera's original sidekick Joe Ashworth made a surprising return.

David will be reuniting with Brenda this month to film the final episodes of Vera, as it's been announced that the beloved series is drawing to a close. While ITV audiences will have to wait until early 2025 to see the new cases unravel, North East author Ann has penned a fresh novel titled 'The Dark Wives', set for a summer release.

In this upcoming book, Vera and her squad delve into the case of a murdered care home staff member, with the plot thickening after a troubled teen from the home, Chloe, goes missing. The situation escalates when another corpse is discovered. The online summary for 'The Dark Wives' hints at danger for Vera, stating: "Vera knows she has to find Chloe to get to the truth, but it seems that the dark secrets in their community may be far more dangerous than she could ever have believed."

Over the last decade, Vera has filmed across several popular spots around the North-east and Teesside, including Redcar and Hartlepool.
