Vera's Kenny Doughty left 'in bits' by drama as star linked to ITV spin-off return

Kenny Doughty has admitted to being left 'in bits' by another TV drama, as his name comes into the frame to return to Vera to replace former co-star Brenda Blethyn.

It's ow been a year since Kenny, having filmed is final scenes as DS Aiden Healy at the end of 2022, officially confirmed he was leaving his role in the hit ITV drama, after an eight year stint as Brenda's on screen sidekick. He was last seen on screen on Boxing Day, as feature length Christmas special The Riding Tide attracted an audience of millions.

While the ex Coronation Street star has yet to speak out on Vera ending, after the news broke two weeks ago, Kenny's name was been strongly linked with the lead role in a potential spin-off, with him and original sidekick David Leon, who made a shock return to the fold in series 13, the two top contenders should one happen.

But, rather wading in on any Vera speculation, Kenny, who recently headed to Shetland to join wife Ashley Jensen for filming on the BBC show of the same name, Kenny has instead been heaping praise on much buzzed about Sky drama The Tattooist of Auschwitz. The six part series, based on a novel by Heather Morris and based on the real life experiences of Holocaust prisoners, has had rave reviews over the last few weeks.

And joining the growing list of people who've been blown away by the drama, Kenny took to Instagram to share a photo of its poster and wrote: "Watched Tattooist of Auschwitz on Sky Atlantic & was in bits. Brutal, poignant & compelling drama. Synchronicity have made yet another wonderful unique adaptation of a book." Replying to him, one fan responded: "The book broke me I’m not sure I’m ready for the film yet" as another commented: "I’m so nervous about watching it as loved the book so much, but if @kennydoughty says it’s good, I’ll dive right in"

Other more surprising stars linked to the lead role in a Vera spin-off include Happy Valley legend Sarah Lancashire and Vigil actress Suranne Jones, as Brenda and the rest of the cast continue filming in the North East on what looks like being the final series.
