Kenny Doughty has let slip that he is filming a new TV show, just over a year after he devastated Vera fans by quitting his role in the hit drama.

Kenny joined the ranks of the much loved ITV show in series 5 as DS Aiden Healy, replacing original sidekick David Leon, after the North East born actor made a shock exit, much to the sadness of lead actress Brenda Blethyn. Kenny ended up being on Vera for eight years and, after dropping a hint that he might be off, by posting some photos with his co-stars captioned; "Thanks for the memories." Kenny announced in spring 2023 that he'd made the 'difficult decision' quit.

He revealed the news on Instagram, telling his many followers: "I want to thank everyone who’s made this amazing time so joyous, ITV, Silverprint, all the brilliant cast and crew BUT of course my buddy & inspiration Brenda Blethyn. The perfect leading star who I owe so much to. I feel lucky to have you as a friend, you make me howl with laughter & have been a rock for me over the years. I can’t thank you enough. Precious times."

Kenny ended his post with a message for fans, writing: "And finally the Vera fans: without you and your support I would never have made so many films. You really are the best fans in the world. Thank you so much for your loyalty & love for the show."

Kenny's final appearance as Aiden came in Vera Christmas special The Rising Tide in December, which was shot at the end of 2022 and, since then has been away from the limelight, spending time in Shetland with new wife and fellow TV star Ashley Jensen, as she filmed the new series of the BBC drama of the same name, also written by Vera author Ann Cleeves.

But it looks like fans won't have to wait long to see Kenny back on screen as, taking to Insta earlier this week, he revealed he has been back in front of cameras. in Ireland Sharing a photo of a pint of Guinness at Dublin airport, Kenny wrote: "Sláinte! Treating myself to an early weekend pint at the airport. Week 1 of filming in the bag!! Looking forward to a weekend home. Have gorgeous weekends!"

There was a lot of excitement over the post, with one fan replying: "What's coming up? Miss you on Vera - miss you very much" and another commenting: "What you filming and do you miss Vera it’s not the same without you"
