A once self-proclaimed 'best curry house on earth' in East London has a food safety rating of 1. Aladin - on Brick Lane - has 4.9 stars on Google but received the terrible score when it was inspected on May 15 this year.

But despite the awful food safety score, people are raving about it on Google reviews. One diner said: “Great meal and plenty of food for two with our two entrees, rice, naan and bhaji. Super friendly service by all including Farhan who was up for laughing at some terrible jokes! I will come back for sure. The BYOB for beers was super too.”

And a second said: “A very solid Brick Lane option. Decent bhuna, and looked after nicely by Jack and his team. Likely to recommend to a friend.”

While a third wrote: “Lovely place to eat, and bring your own booze as well. Max was really good and served us very well! We had an extra person join us halfway through and they had no problem tagging along!”

When a restaurant’s cleanliness is inspected, it’s carried out by the council on behalf of the Food Standards Agency (FSA). The places to eat are rated from 0 to 5 (for brilliant) in terms of their food safety, with the scores listed on the FSA website.

Zero means urgent improvement is required, one says major improvement is necessary, two means some improvement is necessary, three says hygiene standards are generally satisfactory. A rating of four suggests hygiene standards are good, while five says food hygiene standards are very good.
