Leicester’s musical talent will be celebrated in a special event this weekend. Organisers say the showcase will provide a “vibrant” atmosphere for all.

The series of live acoustic performances will be held at St Peter’s Square in front of the beacons of Leicester’s Highcross Shopping Centre on Saturday (June 22). The event marks this year’s World Music Day which is celebrated on Friday (June 21), with Highcross bosses teaming up with social enterprise 2 Funky Arts to showcase a series of musical talents from the county.

The line-up includes Dani Matty, a 27-year-old Leicester-based singer-songwriter and producer who has been writing songs with her acoustic guitar since the age of 14. She will be joined by Jake Thompson, a 20-year-old singer-songwriter who will be playing a mixture of released and unreleased songs from his catalogue.

Saturday’s bill also includes 18-year-old Sariah Carter. The singer-songwriter writes ballads with elements of blues, country and indie-alternative music and is aiming to put on a real show to shoppers and everyone who is out and about.

Jo Tallack, senior general manager of Highcross, said: “At Highcross, we are huge advocates for creativity and community, and big believers in the unique powers music has to bring people together.

“World Music Day, although taking place on the 21st, has presented us with the perfect opportunity to continue to celebrate the incredible local talent we have in Leicester. We’re proud to partner with 2 Funky Arts to showcase these highly skilled, and flourishing, artists while providing a unique and vibrant atmosphere for our visitors to enjoy. We invite everyone, of all ages, to join us for a free afternoon of memorable acoustic performances, and to be part of this special occasion.”

The free acoustic performances event is one of a number of celebrations taking place on Saturday. The Highcross Showcase Cinema de Lux will be hosting a number of showings, including band biopic, ‘Ghost’, at 1pm and 10.15pm, while musical biopic ‘Waitress’ (7.10pm) is on show on Sunday, June 23.

The acoustic performances will take place between 12pm and 2pm on Saturday, June 22. More information can be found online.
