Line Of Duty star Vicky McClure has shared what her dream role in TV would be - acting in a romcom, or playing a man.

The drama star is due to feature in new ITV bomb disposal thriller Trigger Point early next year, which has drawn comparisons with her famous part in the BBC police procedural.

But McClure, who also starred in This Is England, admitted she'd like to go for something completely different next.

Asked what she'd like to do in TV next, she laughingly told Yahoo and other press: "I want to do a romcom. Something really light and funny would be lovely...for a bit of light relief."

Talking about the comparisons between her Line Of Duty and Trigger Point characters, she added: "They're both very strong women for sure and very brave and very committed, but that's the kind of roles I love to take, if I read a script I often want to play the male's role because that is the strong, committed role, so I'm always going to be drawn to that."

However, McClure said she wasn't worried about being pigeon-holed in a particular type of role.

She said: "I'm not concerned, this is what actors do. I've fallen into this genre and Line Of Duty, we never expected it to do what it's done and I can't be worried about taking roles that might feel in a similar world because of that."

The actor works with Line Of Duty writer Jed Mercurio again for Trigger Point, which he executive produces, and admitted there was a certain stress attached to being involved in one of his projects as he is known for killing off major characters.

She said: "If ever I'm turning the page on a Line Of Duty script, it can be quite scary."

While McClure is drawn to strong characters, she said that she was nothing like her recent characters in real life.

Asked whether she could ever be a bomb disposal expert in real life, she said: "I'm definitely not cut out for that, I'm scared to cross the road sometimes. People might think I'm hard, I'm not.

"What I am is very nosy so in terms of interrogation and asking questions and getting to the truth, I think I'd be alright at that."

McClure stars alongside Martin Compston in Line Of Duty and shared that the waistcoats his character Steve Arnott were known for wearing had inspired a recent gift for him from herself and co-star Adrian Dunbar.

She said: "When Martin had his baby, we did buy his baby a waistcoat."

Trigger Point will air on ITV in 2022.
