This Victoria’s Secret Perfume Is Basically A Glorified Mosquito Repellent

While perfume is often known for attracting insects in the summer, a Victoria’s Secret scent has been found to do exactly the opposite.

The American firm’s Bombshell perfume was found to keep mosquitos away for up to two hours, in a recent study.

Researchers were testing the perfume alongside a range of insect repellents because they thought it would attract bugs, so the finding was a big surprise.

Interestingly, the perfume also did a better job than any of the organic mosquito detergents in the test, which was published in the Journal of Insect Science.

Previous research suggests that fruity, floral scents attract insects, as anyone who has worn perfume while on holiday in sunnier climes can probably attest to.

If a perfume has the power to repel mossies, does that mean the end of grim-smelling anti-insect sprays? Probably not, say the experts.

The experiment used more perfume than a person would normally wear in one go - around 0.5ml - so the scent might not have quite the same affect when worn normally, say the researchers.

What’s more, the scientists reckon the perfume’s insect-repelling skills may have had less to do with its ingredients and more to so with the fact that it was masking the natural smell of the volunteer, which is what draws the bugs in.

The Victoria’s Secret scent was randomly chosen for the experiment after one of the test subjects received it as a birthday present.
