Dozens feared trapped in South African mall collapse

Rescue workers in South Africa continue to search for dozens of people feared buried under the rubble of a collapsed shopping mall construction.

It is understood as many as 24 people could be trapped in the debris.

At least two people are known to have died when the three-story football pitch-sized section of the building unexpectedly came down near the city of Durban.

It is unclear what caused the mall to collapse near the town of Tongaat but the Deputy Mayor says local authorities had tried to halt construction a month ago.

“There are areas of the law that they did not follow in terms of building of this infrastructure,” said Nomvuzo Shabalala. “We were not aware that they were continuing building.”
