Highway Officials Experiment With Building Road Over Kilauea Volcano Lava Flow

Hawaii highway officials conducted an experiment on November 7 to assess the viability of rebuilding a road over the Puna lava flow, where Apaa Street was situated before it was engulfed by lava.

The flow of lava from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano has been paused since October 30. Scientists from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory flew over the site of the original lava flow on November 7 and will continue to monitor lava breakouts upslope from Pahoa village.
