Host of McKinney Pool Party Where Police Used Force Speaks Out

In a video posted to YouTube on June 7, Tatiana, a 19-year-old, describes a fight in the moments leading up to police using force to clear a pool party in McKinney, Texas, on June 5. In the video, Tatiana says her family was hosting a cookout for friends in the Dallas suburb when a white woman used racial slurs against them.

Tensions soon rose when a 14-year-old family friend defended the host, calling the remarks racist. A white woman then, says Tatiana, told her “you need to go back to where you’re from” and to “go back to your Section 8 home”. Tatiana says it was when she replied “excuse me” that another white woman smacked her in the face and “both women attacked” her.

LaShana Burks, who is described as Tatiana’s mother, says in the video, “I’m just upset that we couldn’t have a peaceful event. And if it was an issue that they truly had, they should have came to me – the adult – that was here at the event.”

A McKinney, Texas, police officer was placed on leave after video emerged showing him using force, including drawing his gun, at a pool party on June 5.

At a press conference on June 7, the police chief said 12 officers responded to the disturbance, but only one was placed on administrative leave. Credit: YouTube/E Johnson Photo
