'Kayaktivists' Attempt to Block Shell Oil-Drilling Rig

Activists attempted to block a Shell oil-drilling rig from leaving the port in Seattle, Washington, on June 15. The “kayaktivists” formed a blockade in an attempt to stop the rig from heading to the Arctic Ocean, but they were unsuccessful in their attempts, according to local media. The US Coast Guard detained 24 of the protesters, who were issued notices that carry a $500 fine. Seattle City Councilman Mike O’Brien was among those detained.

Seattle activists have been protesting the rig since the port decided to allow Shell to house it there. Similar kayak protests were held when the rig arrived in port. Credit: Facebook/Bill Moyer
