President Obama Visits Selma to Mark 'Bloody Sunday' Anniversary

President Obama and the first family visited Selma, Alabama, for a remembrance march on Saturday, March 7. The march marked the 50th anniversary of protesters being clubbed and tear gassed by police at a civil rights demonstration later dubbed ‘Bloody Sunday’. During his remarks, Obama said, “50 years from Bloody Sunday, our march is not yet finished, but we’re getting closer.”

United States Attorney General Eric Holder, the Rev. Al Sharpton, members of the Alabama congressional delegation and thousands of activists descended on Selma for the 50th anniversary of ‘Bloody Sunday’, on March 8, to commemorate the civil rights marchers that spurred the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
