Six Killed by Powerful Earthquake Off Northern Chile

A magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck off Chile’s northern coast early on April 2, leaving at least six people dead. The quake sparked fires and a small tsunami. Waves of six feet above normal were recorded in southern Peru, forcing about 200 people to leave the seaside town of Boca del Rio. The cities of Iquique, where several hundred inmates escaped from a women’s prison, and Arica, which suffered a power blackout, were among those hardest hit.
