US Coast Guard Frees Fisherman From Antarctic Ice

A US Coast Guard icebreaking vessel freed 26 fisherman on February 15 after their vessel, the Antarctic Chieftain, became trapped in thick ice in Antarctica’s Southern Ocean. The fisherman were towed to safety by the Polar Star which, according to the US Coast Guard, is “the nation’s only active heavy icebreaker” and is “capable of breaking through ice as much as 20-feet thick.” Credit: YouTube/US Coast Guard
