Young Hong Kong Protester Makes Plea to World for Help

A video of a young protester calling for the world to support Hong Kong’s pro-democracy campaign has gone viral since being published on September 28. The following morning it had been viewed nearly 200,000 times.

“As a Hongkonger standing here in Wan Chai, I ask all of you from all over the world: please help us," said Glacier Kwong, a Hong Kong University student, as she looked into the camera.

“You are born with democracy choices and have free election rights, but we don’t. Please help us. Please spread the news all over the world.”

Thousands of people joined a demonstration outside Hong Kong’s government headquarters on September 28 after pro-democracy movement Occupy Central announced the start of its campaign of civil disobedience. The start of the Occupy Central campaign, which has threatened a blockade of Hong Kong’s financial district, had been expected to start on October 1. Beijing’s decision to reject calls for open nominations for the election of Hong Kong’s chief executive in 2017 have angered Hong Kong’s pro-democracy campaigners.
