There's nothing wrong with meeting in the middle, and that's precisely what the new Mercedes CLE-class wants to do. Acting as a replacement for both the C-class and E-class coupes of yore, the CLE comes with one of two turbocharged engines—a 2.0-liter four or a 3.0-liter six—and standard all-wheel drive.
It's hard to tell from pictures, but the CLE-class coupe doesn't precisely split the differences between the compact C-class and midsize E-class coupes it replaces.
The CLE's 112.8-inch wheelbase is the same as the current C-class sedan's.
Overall, the CLE is 6.5 inches longer than the old C-class coupe.
The interior borrows a hefty amount of its materials and aesthetic from the C-class sedan, but the seats are unique to the CLE.
The base CLE300 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four producing 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
If you yearn for a bit more motive force, the CLE450 drops the turbo four in favor of a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six producing 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.
No matter what's under the hood, a 48-volt integrated starter-generator is standard. It can add up to 23 horsepower and 151 pound-feet at certain times.
We estimate the CLE300 will take about 5.2 seconds to reach 60 mph, while the CLE450 should knock out that same sprint in about 4.2 seconds.
Top speed is limited to 130 mph on both models, which is a bummer if you're constantly hammering the autobahn.
