Volvo recently flew us to Sweden to get behind the wheel of the new electric EX30 and learn how to do the Scandinavian flick on a frozen lake.
The Volvo EX30 is the brand's new subcompact EV SUV, and it's available with a 268-hp rear-drive powertrain or a 422-hp all-wheel-drive setup.
Volvo brought us to the Björnträsket ice track and taught us a technique known as the Scandinavian flick, a.k.a. the pendulum turn.
The EX30 models we drove wore studded Michelin X-Ice North 4 winter tires that provided predictable traction on the ice track, as well as on the region's snow-covered roads.
The multistep maneuver is meant to manipulate a car's momentum to make it rotate around a corner on a slippery surface.
The all-wheel-drive EX30 seemed easier to flick at first, thanks to its heady acceleration and the greater freedom provided by its partially deactivated stability-control system.
While the rear-drive EX30 had a larger learning curve, once we got the drift (pun intended), it was more rewarding to slide around on the ice because it required more skill.
Keep going to check out even more pictures of the Volvo EX30.
