Ford has revealed the F-150 Lightning Switchgear, the latest in a line of technology demonstration vehicles that aim to show that driving enjoyment will still remain as the market transitions to electric vehicles.

The Switchgear was built with RTR Vehicles, run by drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr., and is based on a F-150 Lightning with the extended range battery.

The powertrain is unmodified, still spitting out 580 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque.

Ford said it will build a road-focused version of the Switchgear but is currently focusing on this gnarly off-road special.

The Switchgear's bulging carbon-composite fenders hide a track width that has increased from roughly 68 inches to a whopping 80 inches.

The suspension has been upgraded with Fox 3.0-inch-diameter internal-bypass dampers, giving the truck 11 inches of wheel travel up front and 13 inches at the rear.

The Switchgear also rides on a custom double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension.

The off-road Switchgear rides on 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires on 18-inch forged aluminum alloy beadlock wheels.

The cabin is fitted with five Recaro sports seats with six-point harnesses and a giant hand brake.

A bed-mounted rack holds a spare tire and wheel, and the Switchgear also wears steel fabricated rock rails.

The Switchgear will serve as a test bed for future electric trucks and should hopefully lead to an electric version of the burly F-150 Raptor.
