The Edinburgh set detective series Rebus has been diving viewers, after reaching 10 million viewers on BBC iPlayer.

While many praised the shows acting, accent and attitude - others branded some of the Edinburgh twangs on screen "horrific". Others also took issue with the "over the top" violence.

The series follows Detective Sergeant John Rebus as he becomes tangled up in a brutal criminal conflict. Richard Rankin, who was cast in the lead role, is significantly younger than the book version and previous iterations of the show - which many were also surprised with.

The series hit streaming back in May, and has been watched across the world since it was released. It's based on the popular book series from Ian Rankin.

While some viewers branded the show "tremendous", and commended the "proper" Edinburgh accents - others had different feelings.

Stuart Bennett added: "It’s the most excellent adaptation. Properly Edinburgh in accent and attitude."

Alison Bryce posted: "This Rebus has been the best. I have binge watched. Just fantastic. Love seeing all the different parts of Edinburgh too. Brilliant!"

Gordon Skinner commented: "I have to admit I was a bit dubious about it but it’s tremendous, really, really good. Another season would be ace."

However, not all were in agreement. Duncan Little posted: "A decent watch but, the accents are horrific and not remotely accurate."

Andrew Murray said: "I'll reserve judgement until we've seen series two.

"However, I do have a couple of criticisms, some of the acting was poor and accents unbelievable, violence in drama is more menacing if it's implied NOT applied and Edinburgh has more to offer than one street and a floral clock."

Diana Jones suggested: "Great drama, love it - but I find the violence a bit over the top."

Andrew Rudd commented: "It is crap. No connection to the books. Bring back the gentle John Hannah."

Another added: "Prefer the slightly less violent series with older Rebus. Books are brilliant regardless."
