Viewers have praised the firefighters who attended the Grenfell Tower blaze for their ‘bravery’ and ‘heroism’ following the ITV documentary Inside London Fire Brigade.

Episode one of the three-part series featured first-hand accounts of the force’s efforts to quell the fire, with members of the service revealing they were prepared to die to save the tower’s trapped residents.

During an interview with London Fire Brigade commander Richard Welch, the officer explained: “We had no intention of coming out of there until we had saved as many people as we could. If it was going to collapse, then we were going to die trying.

"Every single person within that building was willing to lose their own life to try to save others. Every single person.”

Twitter users commended the firefighters on their ‘selfless bravery’.

Others called for the men and women of the service to be put on the honours list and receive pay rises:

The Grenfell Tower fire occurred on June 14 when a blaze ripped through a 24-storey block of flats in the London area of North Kensington.

The fire, which killed at least 80 people and injured 70, was intensified by low-cost cladding that had been added to the building during a recent renovation project.

More than 250 firefighters from 70 fire engines worked to control and extinguish the fire, with officers breaking their own safety protocols in their attempts to save the victims. At the height of the blaze over 100 firefighters were inside the building.

The next episode of Inside London Fire Brigade airs on August 4 at 9pm on ITV.
