A Cambridgeshire Post Office has announced it will be closing its doors at the end of next month. The Sutton branch, on High Street, is due to shut on Thursday, June 27.

In a letter sent to customers, the company said the decision was made due to retail partner One Stop resigning. It initially planned to close in March, but continued to operate for the next few months.

The store said that there had been a huge decline in demand for services in recent years. However, a petition launched by locals argued that the post office was still well-used and a vital service in the village.

Despite the closure, the company announced a new Drop & Collect service would be offered at the village. They added that there were also nearby alternative branches available in Witchford and Ely.

The letter said: "Further to our previous letter advising that our retail partner One Stop, had made the difficult decision to resign, and regrettably as a result Sutton Post Office was due to close. We can now confirm that the branch will be closing on Thursday 27 June 2024 at 5.30pm.

"To help mitigate the loss of some vital Post Office services, we are pleased to confirm that a Post Office Drop & Collect service, which is a lighter branch format will open from the same location on Saturday 6 July 2024 at 9am, where it will be known as High Street Drop & Collect.

"Drop & Collect will offer services from a handheld device, allowing customers to maintain access to bill payments and prepaid parcel services from the current branch location. Details of the opening hours and the products and services available are provided overleaf.

"If you are a local representative, we will write to you again once we have any news about our plans for future service provision. We apologise for the inconvenience the closure may cause."

More information about the closure can be found on the Post Office website here.
