Burnley boss Vincent Kompany hopes “common sense prevails” and a verdict is delivered on Nottingham Forest’s points deduction appeal hearing soon.

The Reds were back in front of an independent commission last Wednesday as they challenged their four-point deduction for breaching Profitability and Sustainability Rules. They had expected to hear the outcome this week, but little more than 24 hours before Saturday’s clash with Sheffield United are still none the wiser over whether their appeal has been successful.

It means there is a lack of clarity over the relegation picture at the bottom of the Premier League table. Forest do not know for certain how many points they have, and that also has an impact on their survival rivals.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side currently sit 17th in the table, one point ahead of 18th-placed Luton Town and two ahead of Burnley in 19th spot. A final-day trip to Turf Moor is threatening to be decisive, and Kompany has called for the Reds’ appeal decision to come well before then.

“Let’s hope common sense prevails and people figure out when to make a decision as well, let’s be honest about this,” he told the Burnley Express. “It’s common sense. The last game of the season is Forest v Burnley, so it’s just common sense. You don’t need me to tell you that.

“The only thing is, I haven’t worried about it all season, I haven’t taken it as a factor all season so I’m not going to start now. It’s the same mindset for me. It doesn’t play any part in what we’re doing for the next game.”

The Premier League have a backstop date of May 24 in place for concluding the cases of both Forest and Everton. They recently said a verdict over the latter’s appeal against their two-point deduction for a second PSR breach would be sorted before the final round of fixtures on May 19. The Reds are expected to hear the outcome of their appeal well before then.

Nuno expects the relegation battle to go down to the final game. He said ahead of this weekend's game: “Looking at the table and the next matches, it’s going to be until the end, it’s not going to be solved (at the weekend). We depend on ourselves and after Sheffield United it must still be in our hands so, for that, we must win.”
