Violet Affleck is looking back on how a health crisis in 2019 affected her, while also looking towards the future of ensuring preventative care and spread mitigation for everyone.

The 18-year-old daughter of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner appeared at a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, July 9, during a discussion on COVID-19 precautionary measures. During the public comment section, she opened up about a private health matter she faced five years earlier: a post-viral condition.

"I contracted a post-viral condition in 2019," Violet revealed. "I'm okay now, but I saw first-hand that medicine does not always have answers to the consequences of even minor viruses. The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown that into sharper relief."

Although Violet did not share specifics regarding her condition, she did discuss the "devastating" effects of long COVID, and called for expanding access to COVID testing and medication, increasing mask availability in jails and detention centers, imposing mask mandates in county medical facilities and asked the county to not impose a mask ban "for any reason."

According to the National Library of Medicine, a post-viral condition occurs after someone has recovered from a viral infection. Symptoms include "persistent pain, fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, neuropathic pain, neurocognitive difficulties and sleep disturbances." While long COVID has brought the condition international attention, it's not the only virus that causes persistent symptoms even after recovery.

Violet's calls to keep mask bans at bay likely come as a response to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass discussing in June the possibility of creating a mask ban that particularly target protesters, according to The Guardian.

As for Violet, her most recent accolade — beyond public speaking — was graduating from high school.

"Tell me you have a graduate without telling me you have a graduate. 🎓 (bless our hearts 🥺♥️😭)," Garner, 52, captioned a post on Instagram in May alongside photos from the special occasion.

Garner and Affleck, who were married from 2005 to 2018, share daughters Violet and Seraphina, 15, as well as son Samuel, 12.
