Liverpool capitan Virgil van Dijk has urged his teammate Jarell Quansah not to dwell on the error that gifted Manchester United a goal last weekend.

The two Premier League giants faced off at Old Trafford, with Liverpool knowing a victory would propel them to the top of the Premier League table. However, they could only manage a 2-2 draw that saw the lead change hands.

The Reds took an early lead through Luis Diaz, but goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo turned the game around. A late penalty from Mohamed Salah ensured the spoils were shared.

United's first goal came from a misplaced pass by the Anfield academy graduate Quansah, which Fernandes capitalised from as goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was off his line. Van Dijk defended Quansah during his post-match interview, stating that mistakes are part of football and should be learned from.

Speaking to BBC MOTD, he said: "He shouldn't [be impacted]. Mistakes happen in football everyone who has a career in football makes mistakes you can only learn from it."

Van Dijk also expressed disappointment at the result, adding: "It feels Like a loss, it is our fault again. We had so many chances and we should finish the game off.

"Unfortunately the individual mistake that happened with the equaliser and we had so much time to put it right, but we were in a rush. Still after being 2-1 down we created so much."

Liverpool's missed opportunities were the talk of the match, with Mo Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai failing to capitalise on clear-cut chances, leaving manager Jurgen Klopp visibly exasperated. Van Dijk conceded that Liverpool should have been more comfortably ahead by half-time, saying: "We should have been 2-0 up at least, but in football unfortunately if these things don't happen you give them the feeling they could come back and it happened."

Following the draw, Liverpool find themselves in second place on the Premier League table, neck and neck with Arsenal on points but trailing behind on goal difference. Manchester City is hot on their heels in third place, just a single point adrift.
