Customers have been left in the lurch as Visa and Mastercard services experienced outages throughout the UK on Thursday morning.

Several card users headed to social media to express their frustration over failed payment transactions and difficulties with cash withdrawals. The disruption with Visa seemed to begin at about 8am, with DownDetector showing reports from over 600 people facing problems with the service.

One individual took to X, formerly known as Twitter, after having trouble paying on a visit to Asda. They said: "Huge issues with card payments in Asda and ATMs in my area seems to be countrywide, with long queues, machines not working, card declined."

Another shopper also faced problems during an Asda trip, posting: "Just did a whole shop in @asda got to the till and told card payments aren't working across supermarkets/shops in the UK. Does anything work in this country?"

A Sainsbury's customer said: "No card payments accepted at @sainsburys today...is this a National issue??" Sainsbury's acknowledged the predicament, confirming that it was indeed a nationwide problem.

Other high street names like McDonald's and Marks & Spencer were also mentioned in user complaints, reports the Mirror.

One commented on the lack of forewarning at McDonald's: "McDonald's what a s*** show cash only but didn't think to put signs up before your drive thru to warn people idiocy." While another highlighted issues in North West England: "No card payments being taken in North West England this morning. ATM's still OK. Any updates?"

An Asda spokesperson commented: "We are aware of the issue that is going on and we are working hard to get this fixed as soon as possible." Sainsbury's said that the problem had now been resolved.

A Visa spokesperson said: "We are aware that some cardholders are experiencing issues when making payments. While Visa’s systems are operating normally, we are working with our partners to investigate."

Downdetector has logged an upsurge in reports concerning Mastercard, with around 130 complaints noted so far. Commenting on the situation, a Mastercard spokesperson added: "We are aware of some payment transaction issues at select merchants in the UK and are working with our partners to gather more information. There is no current indication that these issues are related to our network."
