The Voice’s New Coaches: Everything You Need to Know About the Sing-Off’s First-Ever Coaching Duo, Dan + Shay

OK, probably a lot (as in most?) of you aren’t asking yourselves, “Who are Dan + Shay?” — aka as The Voice’s first-ever coaching duo — because you already know. They’ve been making waves in the music biz for more than a decade. But for anyone who — admittedly, like me — lives under a rock and isn’t super-familiar with them, here’s the 411.

Legend has it that Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney met at a party at the former’s house in 2012. They jammed together that same night and started co-writing the very next day. And they say bromance is dead!

In no time — well, technically, about a year’s time — Dan + Shay had released their first album, Where It All Began, which included the single “Nothin’ Like You,” which hit No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart. Have a listen below.

More albums and singles followed. Arguably, the pair’s best-known offering remains “10,000 Hours,” their collaboration with Justin Bieber that came out only days after he married Stephen Baldwin’s model daughter, Hailey. The single debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

Despite Dan + Shay’s success, they almost split up after their 2021 tour. “I could feel the separation,” Shay told People in 2023, “and I think there [were] little things… that we never talked about.”

Clearly — hopefully? — their issues have been worked out. Long before a red swivel chair was added to The Voice’s coaching panel for Season 25 (which kicks off Monday, Feb. 26, at 8/7c on NBC), Dan + Shay had a history with the show. In Season 15, they performed with winner Chevel Shepherd. In Season 20, they were GOAT Blake Shelton’s Battles advisors. And in Season 24, they subbed for Niall Horan when his schedule occasionally left him MIA.

Are you looking forward to Dan + Shay on The Voice? Do they have an unfair advantage because there are two of ’em? If you could add anyone to the show, to whom would you offer a red swivel chair?
