Despite this, the person who probably felt like the biggest loser at the end of the night was John Legend. He had a shot at stealing a contestant that he’d wanted since the Blinds, and for the second time, his efforts were stymied by fellow coach Chance the Rapper. Who went home? Team Dan + Shay: Frank Garcia (Grade: B) defeated Justin and Jeremy Garcia (Grade: B+) on “Million Reasons” — Justin and Jeremy stolen by Reba | This Battle left me really torn. Frank’s showstopping diva moments at first seemed tough to beat. But the more I heard of the twins’ harmonies, the more I thought, “Tough to beat maybe, but not impossible to beat.” In the end, I gave the brothers the edge but still would’ve kept Frank over them; he seems to have a better understanding of a capital-M Moment on stage and how to work it for maximum impact.

Team Reba: Zeya Raye (Grade: B) defeated William Alexander (Grade: C+) on “Just Give Me a Reason” | Pink and Nate Ruess’ duet was probably too range-y to start with for Reba’s two “sweet, soft-voiced” singers, so this wasn’t exactly a Battle for the ages. That said, Zeya came closer to nailing it than likable William. Her vocals cut through the music more easily than his did, and when it was time for the big notes, hers were simply bigger. John went so far as to call her performance “flawless.”
Team Chance: Maddi Jane (Grade: A-) defeated Nadège (Grade: B) on “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” — Playoff Pass given to Nadège | I am a total sucker for Nadège’s tone; it’s cool like Sade’s, yet also has this warmth to it, a sunniness. (And no, somehow cool + warm does not = tepid in this case.) But Maddi, damn. On the teammates’ Lauryn Hill cover, she had a total A Star Is Born moment, not only pulling notes like they were taffy but flat-out owning the stage. Presence personified. Glad Nadège didn’t get cut, though (and even if Chance hadn’t Playoff Pass’d her, Steals were in play by Dan + Shay and John, whose vexation at being thwarted again seemed playfully genuine).
