When a group of volunteers started monitoring the speed of cars travelling through their tiny village, they expected some to be speeding.

But the group in Staplehurst, Kent, were blown away when they clocked a whopping 133,000 instances of speeding through their village in just one week.

Armed with speed guns and special electronic strips laid on the road, members of the parish council stood along the village’s four main roads between November 14 and 20 last year.

Of the 284,024 vehicles that were detected driving through the village, motorists were breaking the 30mph and 40mph speed limits on 133,000 occasions.

On top of that, more than 150 were going over 70mph.

Locals in Staplehurst, which is nine miles south of Maidstone and has a population of just 6,000, are now calling for a speed camera on the road that runs through their picturesque village.

Malcolm Buller, from Staplehurst Parish Council said: “When I told people the figures at the forum, they were just open-mouthed in shock.

“We live here and really don’t want to become an accident statistic.”

Parish council chairman Tom Burnham added: “It is frightening to see what speeds some of the drivers are actually doing through the village.”
