Vox Media, The Atlantic Strike Deals With OpenAI

Vox Media and The Atlantic have become the latest publishers to strike a deal with OpenAI.

At Vox Media, which owns Vox, The Verge, Eater, New York Magazine, The Cut, Vulture and SB Nation, articles from the sites will receive brand attribution and audience referrals within ChatGPT. Vox Media’s archives will also be used to “enhance” ChatGPT’s technology and the publication will use OpenAI to enhance its searchable gift guide from The Strategist and use it as part of its first-party data ad platform, among other uses.

At The Atlantic, the publication’s articles will be searchable within ChatGPT, with queries providing attribution and a link to read the full article. The Atlantic will also give feedback to OpenAI to help improve the news experience on ChatGPT and other products.

The Atlantic is currently developing an experimental microsite, called Atlantic Labs, to figure out how AI can help in the development of new products and features to better serve its journalism and readers––and will pilot OpenAI’s and other emerging tech in this work,” the company wrote in a press release.

“We believe that people searching with AI models will be one of the fundamental ways that people navigate the web in the future,” said Nicholas Thompson, The Atlantic’s CEO. “We’re delighted to partner with OpenAI, to make The Atlantic’s reporting and stories more discoverable to their millions of users, and to have a voice in shaping how news is surfaced on their platforms.”

“As the media and technology landscapes change, it’s vital that accurate, trustworthy information reaches the public, and this partnership recognizes that human creativity and quality journalism are a key part of responsible deployment of generative AI,” said Pam Wasserstein, president of Vox Media.

The financial terms of the deals were not disclosed. PMC, which owns The Hollywood Reporter, has a stake in Vox.

These are the latest companies to partner with OpenAI, as the company picks up its pace of making deals with publishers. OpenAI announced a last deal with News Corp. and all of its affiliated properties, including The Wall Street Journal, a deal with Reddit the prior week and a deal with People owner Dotdash Meredith earlier in May.

At the same time, OpenAI has come under scrutiny for its use of a ChatGPT voice feature that sounds similar to Scarlett Johansson, after Johansson said the company had asked but had not been able to strike a deal for use of her voice last year. That feature has since been paused, according to OpenAI.
