Vue Cinema is bringing classic films back to the big screen in order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of 1999. Movies such as The Matrix, The Mummy, American Pie and Toy Story 2 will be returning to cinemas this summer including at Vue in Gateshead.

There is a mix of genres on offer, from Sci-Fi to classic teen comedies and animated favourites, so there is something for everyone.

The Matrix is the first film on this list and it will be returning from June 8. The brainchild of the Wachowskis, the film revolves around the hero Neo, and spawned three sequels.

Another blockbuster coming back onto the big screen this summer is The Mummy, which is arriving on July 6. The film sees audiences travel back to 1920s Egypt, following English librarian Evie, her brother Jonathan and their guide Rick, as the group accidently unleash a deadly curse, releasing a High Priest who had been dead for centuries.

An iconic teen classic in American Pie is also celebrating its 25th birthday, and is making its return to screens on July 19. The coming-of-age comedy, starring Jennifer Coolidge as Stiffler’s mum, will be back exclusively at the Vue.

For a more family friendly option, Toy Story 2 will be back in the cinema from the July 20. In Pixar’s animated sequel, Buzz and the gang attempt to rescue Woody, who finds himself stolen by a toy collector, introducing beloved characters such as Jessie the cowgirl and Bullseye the horse.

Some of the other films returning to cinemas are Sci-Fi comedy Galaxy Quest starring Sigourney Weaver, which returns on the 21st of June, rom-com She’s All That with Freddie Prinze Jr on the June 29, and thriller Deep Blue Sea starring Samuel L Jackson, from the July 26.

Toby Bradon, general manager at Vue UK & Ireland, said: "Here at Vue we pride ourselves on screening so much more than just blockbusters, as our latest Back on the Big Screen season shows. It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since these classic films were first released, and we’re thrilled to be sharing them on the big screen, the way they were meant to be seen."
