Waitrose has issued recall for a dessert sold in stores after a packaging error meant that some packs contain the wrong product.

The supermarket has warned shoppers that its Waitrose Chocolate Mini Cupcakes may contain walnuts which are not mentioned on the label, posing a possible health risk to those with a nut allergy. The mix-up means that some packs of nine cupcakes with a best before date of July 20, 2024 contain Coffee and Walnut Cupcakes instead.

The product recall has seen the item pulled from shelves, with point of sale notices in stores alerting customers to the risk. Waitrose and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) advise anyone who has purchased the affected pack of cupcakes and has an allergy to walnuts not to eat them, and instead return the product to receive a full refund.

For more information, shoppers can contact Waitrose Customer Care on 0800 188 884, Option 4. A Waitrose spokesperson said: "We're recalling this product as a precaution, due to the presence of undisclosed walnuts. This is because the wrong cupcakes were mistakenly put in the packing. We're sorry for the inconvenience and will be offering customers a full refund."

Waitrose is not the only supermarket to have issued a product recall alert over an allergy risk within the last week. Iceland has also recalled its 4 Golden Savoury Rice Steam Bags because they may contain crustaceans, fish, milk and molluscs that are not mentioned on the label.

The bags affected have a best before date of November 16, 2025, and the pack size is 600g. Customers who have bought the product are asked not to eat it if they have allergies to any of the undeclared ingredients, and are asked to return it to the store for a refund.

Sainsbury's also recalled its Taste the Difference Sea Salt and Suffolk Cider Vinegar Hand Cooked Crisps because they may contain milk, which is not mentioned on the label. The product affected has a best before date of October 26, 2024.

Anyone who has bought the crisps and has an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents is asked not to eat them. Shoppers should instead return the product to their nearest Sainsbury's store, where a refund will be given.
