Wales has just elected its first MP of colour. The new Labour MP for the Vale of Glamorgan is Kanishka Narayan.

The 34-year-old economist beat former Welsh secretary Alun Cairns, the incumbent Conservative MP and former Welsh Secretary in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Born in India and brought up in Cardiff, his parents worked in hospitality and then as lawyers. His brother trained in Cardiff and Bridgend as an NHS doctor. He now lives on Barry waterfront.

He is a trained economist and was previously a senior adviser at the Cabinet Office and then as expert adviser to Britain’s environment secretary. He then went to the private sector advising FTSE boards, government finance ministries, and climatetech entrepreneurs on managing their balance sheets.

He has volunteered with Citizens Advice, Trussell Trust, and his own initiatives to mentor kids from South Wales into fulfilling academic and job opportunities.

Labour is on course for a bumper night in Wales, with a UK-wide exit poll projecting a majority for Keir Starmer of 170 seats. It would be a bruising night to the election campaign for Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party.

The polls closed at 10pm and counting has begun in the general election 2024. The exit poll suggests that the Tories will slump to 131 MPs across the UK, their lowest total since the second world war. Labour would have 410 MPs if the poll is accurate with the Lib Dems on 61 MPs and Plaid with two seats.

The Conservatives face a total wipeout in Wales, losing all 14 seats they had in the 2019 election. At the moment, pundits are suggesting that the party's most hopeful seat is Montgomeryshire. However the party's candidate there, Craig Williams, has effectively been dropped by the party after placing a bet on the date of the General Election.
