The Walking Dead boss Scott M Gimple has asked fans to help support former cast member Erik Jensen after it was confirmed that the actor has stage four cancer.

The actor and writer played the role Dr Steven Edwards in the AMC series, and his family revealed the news that he has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer in a GoFundMe post, as they try to raise $300,000 for surgeries.

"After miraculously surviving a brain aneurysm just a year and a half ago, our beloved Erik Jensen was just diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer," the post began.

His family confirmed that the cancer has "metastasized to his liver", and his doctors "think they have a shot at shrinking the tumors enough to do two very major surgeries and get them all out".

"He can make it through this. But Erik and his family are in for the fight of their lives, and they need your support," the post continues.

They revealed that due to the aneurysm, the Hollywood strikes and now this diagnosis, the family is in "an extremely precarious financial position and they need a lot of help to make it through the next year, pay for treatment to fight his cancer, keep their home, and maintain some sort of stability for [daughter] Sadie".

Gimple, who is chief content officer on The Walking Dead franchise, is among those who have shared their support, as he encouraged fans to donate.

"One of TWD's own could use a little help," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "Erik Jensen, who played Dr Steven Edwards in S5 was just diagnosed with cancer, and it's a time of great uncertainty for him and his family. If you want to send something his way."

The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan has also shared his support, as he reposted Gimple's post on X.

"Never had the chance to work with Erik… until now anyway," the Negan actor wrote. "Only have heard many things about what a great guy he is. I do know he and his could use some help…. Of any and all kind. xojd".
