The Walking Dead's latest episode paid tribute to John Bernecker, the stuntman who lost his life while shooting season eight.

Back in July, Bernecker sustained head injuries after falling 20 feet while rehearsing a fight. Although the scene in question was supposed to end with a "routine fall", the stuntman "lost his footing" and hit the concrete below.

He later died in hospital, and production on the eighth season was temporarily halted.

Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple said at the time that the cast and crew were "heartbroken" by Bernecker's passing, adding: "John's work on The Walking Dead and dozens of other movies and shows will continue to entertain and excite audiences for generations.

"We are grateful for his contributions, and all of us send our condolences, love, and prayers to John's family and friends."

The season eight premiere – which is also the 100th episode overall – displayed an "In Memory Of" message right at the end for Bernecker.

George Romero, creator of the Night of the Living Dead, also received a tribute.

The filmmaker, widely regarded as the father of the modern zombie movie, passed away in July after a battle with lung cancer.

Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, tweeted following his death: "Without George A Romero, there is no Walking Dead.

"His inspiration cannot be overstated. He started it all, so many others followed."

The Walking Dead's season eight opener 'Mercy' follows Rick as he leads a militia comprised of Alexandria, Hilltop, and Kingdom residents to fight back against Negan and his Saviors.

The Walking Dead airs Sunday on AMC in the US, with FOX and NOW TV airing the show a day later in the UK.
