The Walking Dead star Melissa McBride has joined the cast for the second season of spin-off series Daryl Dixon.

The offshoot followed the titular character (Norman Reedus) as he washed ashore in France, with his journey seeing him form new connections and attempt to work out how he got there in the first place.

McBride, who played Carol Peletier on the main show, made a guest appearance in the season finale, and it has now been confirmed that she will have a main role in the second season, which has been subtitled The Book of Carol.

“I’ve known there was much more to be told of Carol’s story as I felt her so unsettled when we last saw her, as she watched her best friend, Daryl, ride away,” said McBride in a statement (via TVLine).

“Apart or (hopefully!) together, their stories run deep, and I’m so excited to continue Carol’s journey here. This team of storytellers have done amazing work to land these two established characters in an entirely new world to them, and I’m loving the discoveries!”

The new series has garnered both critical and popular acclaim since its debut last month, with AMC confirming that the show had set a record for its streaming service AMC+, with the premiere being the most viewed opener in its history.

“What a thrill to have this most recent instalment in The Walking Dead Universe arrive to set records on AMC+ and deliver steady viewership growth over its first four weeks on AMC,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks.

“Thanks to Norman Reedus for bringing his 'bad decisions' to France. [Thanks] to [series creator] David Zabel, [executive producer] Scott M. Gimple, Clémence Poésy and the rest of the outstanding cast.

“[Thanks] to the most passionate and committed fans in entertainment. There is so much more and so many great surprises to come for this show and across this expanding universe.”

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon airs on AMC in the US. A UK broadcaster has yet to be announced.
