Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? viewers complain about ‘obscure’ and ‘worst ever’ £64,000 question

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? had viewers complaining after a contestant faced what some described as the show’s “hardest ever” question.

Last Saturday’s (21 August) instalment of the long-running ITV quiz series saw contestant Glen Bunn return, having hit the £32,000 milestone one week previously.

The question posed to him in order to win £64,000, however, proved fiendishly difficult.

Series host Jeremy Clarkson posed him the question: “From the 2000 awards ceremony onwards, the Best Actress Oscar has never been won by a woman whose surname begins with which one of these letters?”

The four multiple choice options were: “G”, “K”, “M”, and “W”. The correct answer was in fact “G”.

Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet are among the actors to have won the Best Actress Oscar within the relevant time period.

On social media, viewers complained that the question – which required a longer-than-usual process of elimination to answer – was an unwanted departure from the usual line of questioning.

“Worst question I have ever heard on a TV quiz show. So glad he guessed the correct answer,” wrote one person.

Another wrote: “What a stupid first question.”

Someone else described the question as “awful” and “obscure”.

Nonetheless, the contestant managed to guess the right answer and ended the night with a total of £125,000.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? airs at 8.35pm on Saturday on ITV.
