UK weather maps have indicated that in the following days Britain's temperatures could exceed those of popular Mediterranean holiday destination Menorca, going as high as 24C.

After a period of dismal weather that affected most of the UK yesterday afternoon and continued through the night, it appears the sun is set to make a welcome return, with temperatures predicted to soar to a warm 24C in a matter of days, reports the Mirror.

The maps predict that several locations across the country, including Manchester in England and Scottish cities Inverness, Fort William, Aberdeen and Edinburgh, can expect delightful sunshine and temperatures hovering around 18-20C during this time. Meanwhile, on May 3, it is forecasted that temperatures will reach a peak of 24C compared to Menorca's cooler 18C.

In their forecast for May 2 to 11, the Met Office has noted: "In the first part of this period, many areas of the UK are expected to see periods of rain or showers. Some of these showers will be heavy and thundery, with the greatest chance of thunderstorms in the southeast."

They further added,"Along with this will be a fair amount of low cloud in the east at times, with spells of coastal fog, but also temperatures generally above average for the time of year. Overall, northwestern parts of the UK are likely to be driest and sunniest."

"Through the second week, temperatures will return closer to normal, perhaps dipping back below average, but it will also tend to turn gradually drier and more settled, with changeable conditions most likely to hang on longest in the south and southeast."

The outlook is a stark contrast to today's dreary weather, with temperatures struggling to climb higher than 11C across the nation. The Lake District experienced a chilly -6.3C on Friday night, while Heathrow Airport in West London enjoyed a milder 14.7C.

However, the entire country is set for more uniformly cool conditions today and tomorrow.

Despite this, heavy rain is forecasted to sweep northwards through many eastern and central areas today, with Sunday seeing brighter skies and scattered showers in the west, although it will remain quite cool for most.
