Warmth at Frost Pocket Cottage: Ardgowan Estate restores 200-year-old property

A TWO-hundred-year-old former gamekeeper cottage in the historic Ardgowan Estate has been transformed following a major renovation project.

Owner Sir Ludovic Shaw Stewart is keen to open up his estate and help put Inverclyde on the map as a popular tourist destination - with the cottage now set to become a holiday let property.

In a labour of love the entrepreneur has restored the charming Frost Pocket cottage, built in the grounds in 1797, to make it a luxurious destination for visitors to enjoy a short break in the Ardgowan Estate.

Sir Ludo told the Tele that it was a no expense spared refurbishment to ensure the highest of quality, finishing and luxury while filled full of country charm.

It is hoped that the holiday cottage will be yet another attraction on the estate, which will soon include a distillery as well as the Ardgowan House itself which is a highly sought-after wedding venue.

Sir Ludo said: "We have had such great feed back so far from those who have stayed in the cottage. It is also attracting a lot of interest.

"I really feel there is huge potential for Inverclyde to be a more popular tourist destination. It is the most beautiful destination and is a gateway for Argyll as well.

"We felt there really was a gap in the market for a short stay cottage. We want people who come here to get the full experience of a country estate.

"This was project that myself and my partner Jen put our heart and soul into. We wanted it to be authentic and offer a little bit of luxury."

The 400-acre Ardgowan Estate, with its 18th century house has belonged to the Shaw Stewart's for 800 years.

With such an illustrious past, the estate has been at the centre of local history and has had many famous and royal connections over the years.

The present owner inherited the estate from his father Sir Houston Shaw-Stewart, who died 20 years ago.

About ten years ago, Ludo started to take over the reins from his mother Lady Lucinda Shaw-Stewart who now lives in England.

Since then Ludo has been finding innovative ways to continue the traditional forestry, farming, residential and commercial with other initiatives including renewables.

History buff Ludo has also continued the restoration of Ardgowan House.

But he said: "Before the pandemic we were on a real roll so it has taken us a while to get going again. It gave us the chance to regroup and we have a real vision for the estate.

"We are looking at all kinds of ventures, including a wine club and we are busy working on the walled garden."

The latest jewel in the crown is Frost Pocket Cottage which offers access to the shores of the Clyde and the coastal walks.

The cosy cottage has two bedrooms offering relaxation with all the trimmings including a relaxing woodburning stove while also having the luxury of high-speed wifi, and smart TV.
