A warning has been issued to all parents after a Lidl was egged and a police officer was attacked.

Merseyside Police received a call to the Lidl on Wellington Road in Seaforth at around 6pm on Tuesday, July 9. It followed a report of a group of schoolchildren throwing eggs and stones at the store "causing a nuisance for both staff and customers".

Officers said when they arrived the group "quickly cleared" from the area. However a short time later another group of youths, several of who police said matched the descriptions from the incident outside Lidl, approached officers who had been maintaining an unrelated crime scene, nearby on Seaforth Road.

The group were said to be "rude and abusive" towards the PCSOs who were "simply trying to do their job and keep a crime scene secure". The officers then challenged the group about their poor behaviour, however the youths proceeded to throw eggs at the police vehicle before one youth threw an object at one of the officer', striking them to the head.

A 14-year-old boy from the Litherland area was later arrested. He was later released under investigation.

The officer was uninjured by the assault, police said. A spokesperson for the force said enquiries are ongoing to find the other schoolchildren involved in the anti-social behaviour.

They said: "CCTV from the local area and police body-worn footage being reviewed. Our communities, including local residents and businesses, do not deserve to be treated in such a poor manner.

"Nobody goes to work expecting to be assaulted, whether they are part of the policing family or not. South Sefton Neighbourhood officers, working with our partners at Sefton Council, our various housing providers, and other agencies, will continue to use the full range of tools at our disposal to address and tackle Anti-Social Behaviour and criminality."
