A new seat, Washington and Gateshead South contains areas within both Sunderland and Gateshead. Former Washington and Sunderland West MP Sharon Hodgson will contest the seat for Labour.

Ms Hodgson has been an MP for the area since 2010 and has held a number of junior Shadow Ministerial positions. Liberal Democrat councillor Ciaran Morrissey is among the candidates, while Reform’s Paul Donaghy, who came second in Sunderland in the recent North East mayoral election, will also be hoping for a strong showing.

The seat is mostly based on the old Washington and Sunderland West constituency with the addition of the Birtley and Lamesley areas of Gateshead that were previously in the Blaydon constituency.
