WATCH: Building demolished in controversial plans to erect block of flats

A BUILDING has been demolished after controversial plans to build a block of 11 flats which was scorned by residents.

The single house in Burnaby Road in Westbourne was one of the last few remaining properties of a particular style and age in the area.

Developers earmarked the site for a four-storey block of 11 flats which would provide ‘much needed family homes’ including one and two bedroom flats.

However, the plans received 15 letters of objections with residents saying the road is “already overcrowded”.

Susan Brackstone warned an additional 11 flats would “exacerbate” existing parking problems, adding: “Alum Chine has already been over-developed with family homes being demolished and replaced with blocks of flats.”

Kerry Baggott said the design of the proposed new build is “completely out of keeping” with other buildings in the area.

She said: “This particular property is one of the very few remaining properties of this style, age and size in the area.

“The handful of these properties were originally grand houses pertinent to the history of the area. I argue that these properties should be preserved and adapted as opposed to demolished.”

However, Ross Wood who lives opposite the property captured the gradual demolition of the site in June 2024.

The planning documents showed space for 11 parking spaces and it was previously reported the new apartments would be ready for the summer of 2025.

Managing director of developer Stonehaven, Steve Beales, previously said: “The planning success has a particular special place for me personally, as I bought my first property in Alum Chine over 20 years ago and have great memories from living in the location.

“With planning now secured the demolition of the building will commence this month and with apartments ready for their new owners during the summer of 2025.”

He added: “We would also like to acknowledge the BCP planning team for pragmatically engaging with us to deliver a beautiful development which will replace the current derelict and unsightly building and with an art deco style building, which will preserve and enhance the character of the surrounding area and location.”
